Around 400 households in New Lynn and Titirangi lost power for several hours last night.
Vector spokeswoman Philippa White said the outage happened about 7 o'clock.
"It appears to have been caused by the failure of a high voltage insulator ... which may have been as a result of the heavy rain."
She said linesmen were working to repair the fault, but didn't know what time the power would be restored.
A separate power outage in Fort St, central Auckland, was apparently caused by a cable fault and affected around 70 customers.
