Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson fielded questions about her first year on the job from residents at Kandahar Rest Home this week.
Mrs Patterson said her first year had been "challenging but rewarding", and it was important to make time for oneself and family.
She told residents and staff she appreciated the work of those in the aged-care sector.
"We should celebrate our volunteers and the people who are helping others in our community and making a difference," she said.
Kandahar resident Dorothy Butcher said she enjoyed meeting the Mayor and was happy to see more women in leading roles. "It was really great. She's a very humble person and it's nice to see a woman wearing that chain."
