Human error has been blamed for a major blackout that hit the entire top of the South Island late yesterday.
Transpower spokesman Chris Roberts said three lines running up from Islington substation in north Christchurch were lost at 4.35pm.
The fault had been fixed and Transpower had started restoring power last night.
Maintenance contractors at the substation had were to blame, Mr Roberts said.
