About 250 people in the west Auckland village of Huia were warned not to drink their tap water yesterday after tests showed it was contaminated.
The Huia Reservoir was shut down last night as Waitakere City investigated why routine testing showed the water had faecal coliform counts above the limit for safe drinking.
Residents were told to boil all drinking water, water used for food preparation or for brushing teeth.
Manager of council-owned Ecowater Solutions, Tony Miguel, said the problem was localised because the storage reservoir supplied only Huia.
Ecowater staff were investigating whether bacteria had been growing in the pipes or whether there was a problem in the reservoir itself.
"While the problem is thought to be minor, we're operating on a 'better safe than sorry' principle," Mr Miguel said.
