KEY POINTS:
No matter the outcome of last night's big test in Brisbane, one All Blacks supporter is probably still celebrating after winning a record $82,000.
It has emerged that the supporter placed $170,000 on New Zealand to beat the Wallabies at Eden Park last month - and received $252,000 back after the All Blacks' victory.
"It was the biggest bet on rugby ever," said TAB rugby bookmaker Mark Stafford. "It was quite a staggering outlay given both teams had a chance. It was an even contest that was not a foregone conclusion. It took us [the TAB] from getting a healthy profit, to taking a loss on New Zealand."
The sum was paid out two minutes after the final whistle.
"You've got to take your hat off to someone willing to bet that much; it was a big risk for a big return," he said.
Stafford did not know who the winner was, what sex they were, where they lived or anything about them.
There were no bets to rival that large amount before last night's return match in Brisbane, but the bookmakers were still busy. Kiwi fans were in a confident mood - for every bet on a Wallaby victory, there were about 10 All Blacks bets.
Stafford admitted it was sometimes hard to come up with the odds with some games.
"It's a combination of who you think is going to win and what price the public is expecting." He said games between New Zealand and Australia were the biggest betting matches in rugby. "It rattles our cages," he said.
