KEY POINTS:
A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck last night in the Pacific Ocean about 900km northeast of New Zealand.
GNS Science said the quake struck about 350km north of Raoul Island at a depth of 188km. The epicentre was a few hundred kilometres southwest of Tonga.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said the quake had been analysed and there were no indications of a tsunami following.
The 8.28pm jolt was reportedly felt in parts of the North Island between Gisborne and Wellington.
