Australian Prime Minister John Howard steered clear of the controversial issue of dole payments for New Zealanders living in Australia, when he spoke to Auckland business leaders last night.
Instead, Mr Howard, who is in the country for three days of talks, promised good opportunities for New Zealand exporters, which he said would come from continued growth in the Australian economy.
Auckland Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Michael Barnett, says Mr Howard tried to convey a message of co-operation.
John Howard said he expects Australia's economy to survive a slowdown in the United States, and produce growth of about three and a half per cent.
Helen Clark is due to meet with Mr Howard this morning, to discuss defence duties in the South Pacific.
It is expected the finishing touches to an agreement on New Zealand paying welfare benefits to Kiwis living in Australia will be made today but a final announcement is unlikey until tomorrow.
