How MySpacers would rule the world

They would elect a Green government but they condone capital punishment. Energy would come from solar-power and the leader would be Barack Obama or perhaps Robin Hood.

This is the world according to social networking website MySpace, which began five years ago and boasts half a million New Zealand accounts, and has carried out its first census.

With 129 million users worldwide, MySpace would be the world's 11th largest country.

The census shows that country would legalise marijuana, and - while voting would not be compulsory - those who did vote would want United States President Barack Obama in charge. The second most popular choice for head of state was Robin Hood. Prime Minister John Key managed 2 per cent of the vote, which included the opinions of about 400 New Zealanders.

The survey also found that bars would be open around the clock and 31 per cent of people would vote for the Green Party.

Comedy films would be the most watched while the nation would be known for its fast food and Italian cuisine. The favourite holiday destination for the MySpace nation would be Australia.

Meanwhile, soccer is the sport of choice with 40 per cent of people naming it as their favourite - way ahead of the 17 per cent who chose rugby.

But Auckland singer-songwriter Chanelle Davis, who uses the site regularly to promote her music, was sceptical: "I don't know if I believe that rugby is less popular."

Stuntman Ike Hamon, 32, who has worked on television series such as Outrageous Fortune and Legend of the Seeker, uses the site to connect to people interested in music and photography. At last count he had 14,500 friends.

"[It] gives everyone the tools to connect with people from around the world, to develop friendships and networks and it knocks down the so-called six degrees of separation to one degree."
