Police have reported a relatively quiet and settled New Year's Eve, with most regions reporting fewer alcohol-related arrests and hooliganism than last year - apart from the Coromandel, where 155 yobbos were arrested.

As a visitor to Auckland I have enjoyed the surprisingly fine weather over the festive break. however, I was most underwhelmed by last nights pathetic New Year celebration in downtown Auckland, no open air free concert, why?. The best i could find was a Hari Krisna party on Queen street. To add to the nights misery, I witnessed what was possibly the worst fireworks display in living memory organized by a city council anywhere in Gods-own. I will enjoy next years celebratation in Christchurch, where at least the powers to be, know how to organize entertainment for its residents and visitors.
