KEY POINTS:
The death of a man in a Waikato house fire today is being treated as suspicious, police said.
The man died in a blaze that extensively damaged a single-storey home in Ngaruawahia.
Firefighters from the town and from Hamilton were called to the address at 6.30am and found the fire at a flash point when they arrived, Waikato police spokesman Andrew McAlley said.
The body of the man was found inside the house.
"The fire and the manner of the death are being treated as suspicious," he said.
Police, fire officers and forensic scientists were working at the scene.
Mr McAlley said the house was rented and there were three occupants at the time of the fire.
He said police were trying to establish how the two other occupants had managed to get out and he was unable to say whether they had been located.
