The usual anniversary day mini-tournament was played on Monday with a reasonably sized field, but was played in very hot conditions.
The best stableford score of the day was posted by Dion Field whose 48 point total won the men's group 2 competition by the length of the average street. However, second place in that group was claimed by John Braiden, with 43 points, heading off Jim Juno, who scored 40.
Three players ? Larry Gray, Steve Willis and Brian Craig ? all scored 39 while both N. Chesley and Trevor Clayton scored 38. Colin Larsen completed the prize winners in this group with his 37 point score.
Whana Rohe led the lower handicap group with his 43 points with Brian Field, on 41, filling second slot. Both K. Gibbs and A Morrison scored 40, while Tom Bingham came in with 39. Four players ? Russ Sadler, Lyn Evans, Tony McCarthy and Peter Mallitte ? all scored 38 points.
Forty three points was also good enough to win the women's competition. Lyn Andrews was the player in question. Bev Todd filled second place with her 40 points while both Ngaire Taylor and Emma Wills achieved 39. Both Anne Brewer and Colleen Southey scored 38, Margaret Bradshaw scored 37 while both V Bateman and Jeanne Taylor scored 36.
The special prize, donated by Liquor Plus, which was at stake for the nearest the pin on number 12 hole, was won by Whana Rohe while Tom Bingham played the most accurate shot on hole 15.
Holes in two were posted by K Gibbs, Tom Bingham and A Morrison but Lyn Andrews displayed her prowess by achieving two holes in two.
SATURDAY:
The fourth round of the men's and women's Summer Cups was played at Carterton last Saturday.
In the women's competition both Corrie van Zanten and Margaret Bradshaw scored 38 stableford points with Corrie getting the nod on countback. The Summer Starter, Anne Brewer, took third slot, on countback from Colleen Southey with both players scoring 37 points. Fifth place was claimed by Emma Wills, also on countback, with her 34 point total.
Both of the men's groups were won with 43 points.
The lower handicap group was won by Peter Mallitte with Brian Field, on 41 points, in second place. George Rink, 40, was third followed by both Adam Brunton and Stu Ingram on 38. Matt Casey rounded out the prize list with his 36 point total.
The higher handicap group was headed by Larry Gray with Robert Bentley in second place on countback ahead of Max Baylis. Brayden Maizey also scored 42 points to claim fourth place.
Allan Heffer's 40 point total was good enough to place fifth while Steve Andrews filled sixth slot, on countback, with 38 points.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin was won by Adam Brunton while the "All Teed Up" balls went to Margaret Bradshaw, for the women, and to Steve Andrews, for the men.
Players to achieve holes in two were Anne Brewer, Corrie van Zanten, Adam Brunton and Ian Brinkworth.
Russ Sadler's name was drawn in the members draw but, as he had more pressing duties with a visiting grand-daughter, he was absent from the clubhouse and the vouchers will jackpot to next week.
FOOTNOTE:
The scorching heat in which Monday's golf was played certainly took its toll.
In fact there were some players who vowed " never again".
But the action taken by the Carterton Golf Club's new caterer, Dean Maizey, in making available cool drinks and ice blocks to the players on the course was probably the most appreciated gesture of the day.
