KEY POINTS:
Burgers usually come with meat and salad, but a new item on the menu at a Bay of Islands icecream shop is offering something different.
Icecream burgers were put on the summer menu at Cellini's in Russell in October.
Store manager Aom Sittithavron said the treats were slowly taking off with customers.
They are more like a dessert pie than a burger, with a scoop of any flavour of icecream or frozen yoghurt placed between two sweet buns which are toasted on a grill to seal the edges.
"It's warm on the outside and cold on the inside," Miss Sittithavron said. "I love it."
The "burgers" are then dusted with icing sugar and topped with a sweet sauce.
The idea came to the store's owners at a hospitality trade show in Auckland this year.
In the interests of science the Herald's reporter tasted the burger, which was a bit like apple pie without the apple. The top tip, though, is to eat quickly before the icecream melts.
