Wairarapa were given a decent pasting by Hawke's Bay in their Hawke Cup qualifying round cricket match played at Queen Elizabeth Park oval in Masterton on Saturday and Sunday.
Hawke's Bay won by an innings and 67 runs after Wairarapa had come out of the first day with hopes of making a close game of it. At that stage they were 52-1 after the visitors had declared their first innings closed at 316-5. But the second day was a horror story for the home side, 19 wickets falling for the addition of only 190 runs.
Wicketkeeper Seb Langridge stole the show when Hawke's Bay batted, making an unbeaten 100 off 177 balls, including 12 fours. He and Graeme Tryon put on 156 runs for the fourth wicket, Tryon's 84 including 10 fours and two sixes.
The Wairarapa bowlers toiled well on a pitch which had few tricks in it. Seth Rance gave away less than two runs an over in an impressive 22-over stint in which he take 1-41 and youngster Stefan Hook-Sporry worked up good pace in his 13 overs, finishing with 1-38.
There was also a lot to like about the way Calvin Ball maintained a consistent line and length and spinner Jamie Holmes also had good reason to feel satisfied with his efforts. He finished with 1-69 from 18 overs.
