A man who allegedly held three men hostage at a West Auckland panel beaters this week is believed to have smashed a window at the Auckland District Court holding cells yesterday.
The man, 35, a cabinetmaker, was appearing on three counts of kidnapping, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police and reckless driving. He was remanded in custody until mid-August.
Judge Nicola Mathers granted name suppression to allow time for a psychiatric assessment to be completed.
It is believed the man smashed a window while he was in a cell before yesterday's appearance.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed a window had been broken but was not sure if charges would be laid in relation to the incident.
The man allegedly held Peter Pardesi, 53, and brothers Ron and Rom Kumar, 19 and 17 respectively, hostage in the workshop of New Lynn Automotive Panel and Paint on Tuesday, after a police pursuit which began in Mt Roskill.
