The Auckland District Health Board is temporarily closing 10 per cent of beds at its troubled acute mental hospital.
Te Whetu Tawera has a serious shortage of nurses and the Public Service Association says it is afflicted by unsafe working conditions, evidenced by a "high number of assaults" on staff by patients.
Six of the 58 beds at Te Whetu Tawera, the acute mental health facility near Auckland City Hospital, will be closed over the next three weeks.
