KEY POINTS:
Auckland City Hospital now says it has not recently treated a patient with cholera, contrary to an earlier statement.
It says that while cholera was at first suspected, it is now believed to be a form of gastroenteritis that closely mimics cholera.
The man with the illness was admitted last Monday and staff hoped he could be discharged today.
Cholera is a potentially fatal bacterial disease, generally spread through contaminated food or water, and is rare in New Zealand. From 1997, only 10 cases were notified.
The one case last year was a man who had recently returned from India, where he had drunk untreated water.
