Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia is horrified at a deliberate attack at the Waitangi Treaty House this morning.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill, wilful damage and several other offences after allegedly driving his car directly into the Treaty House.
It followed complaints of a man yelling, making threats, and driving a car on the grassed area of the Grounds.
Horomia says it was a disgusting act and all New Zealanders will be upset by the attack.
He says the offender might have anxiety and frustrations about things that have happened but people need to rise above that and make sure they have a better place to live. He says at this time of year people should be enjoying the festivities and not acting irrationally.
Meanwhile, the Far North mayor Yvonne Sharp does not think an attack on the country's most important historical site was a planned or politically motivated.
She emphasises that the Treaty grounds are open for business and the damage was very minor.
