Department of Conservation staff are optimistic a pohutukawa tree will live despite smouldering for three days after some ill-considered New Year's Eve fireworks in Northland.
DoC conservator Chris Jenkins said a contractor had been winched from a helicopter and had hosed high-pressure water into the burning parts of the tree on a cliff face in a reserve at Pataua South, near Whangarei.
