KEY POINTS:
Southland police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was fatally stabbed in Gore on Tuesday night.
Police said an argument had resulted in the "tragic death" of Richard Hugh Briggs, 42, at the Main St property.
He was found dead outside the house when they arrived at 10.20pm.
Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail told the Southland Times the armed offenders squad was sent to a house in Hyde St, Gore, later that night.
People at the house were spoken to and a 43-year-old man was arrested for assault, he said.
He has appeared in Invercargill District Court, was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody until December 30.
No plea was entered.
Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy, of Invercargill CIB, said an autopsy found Mr Briggs died from a single stab wound to the chest and, as a result, it was likely further charges would be laid when the man reappeared in court.
"It's an argument that's resulted in a tragic death."
