KEY POINTS:
A large team of police was working in heavy rain in the south Auckland suburb of Mangere today after a man's body was found in a park.
The 33-year-old man had injuries and police set up a homicide inquiry about 4.30am and cordoned off the area when the body was found in Williams Park.
Police said there were few details available and the body had yet to be formally identified although police believed they knew who he was.
"Other than to say a man was found dead in Williams Park today, there are no other details," said Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Middleton.
"Until he is identified we won't be releasing any other details," he said.
He confirmed police had set up a homicide inquiry because the man had obvious injuries.
He would not say if those injuries were a result of a stabbing, a shooting or an assault.
Police did not have a weapon.
Several tents were erected over the body and the surrounding area although it was not known when it would be removed for a post mortem.
A function was believed to have been held at a rugby clubrooms which backs onto Williams Park.
