Gisborne police have completed their scene examination at Kaiti Beach, where what is believed to be the body of missing Indian man Amandeep Singh was found.
A homicide inquiry into the death is ongoing.
The body found in scrub and small trees is believed to be on its way to Auckland where police say a post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow to ascertain the definite identity of the body and to establish the cause of death.
Everything points to the remains being those of 22-year-old Mr Singh, who disappeared on the night of December 29.
ESR scientists, detectives and crime scene tapes have gone now from Kaiti Beach, but the Gisborne community waits for an outcome to this tragedy that has deeply shocked many people here.
