KEY POINTS:
Wanganui police have launched a homicide inquiry after a local woman, who was shot in the head on Saturday, died in hospital today.
Detective Sergeant Neil Forlong said a 24-year-old local woman was taken to Wanganui Hospital by police after being found with a gun shot wound to her head.
This morning she was in a critical condition.
He said there were two potential scenes which police had cordoned off, with the help of the army to "protect these from the elements".
About 20 police and ESR staff were to carry out scene examinations and enquiries.
Police said they would like to speak to 29-year-old Karl James Copley Lane "in respect of this matter".
He was described as Caucasian, 165cm tall, of medium build, wearing blue jeans, a dark sweatshirt and a camouflage beanie and driving a 1990 Holden Commodore saloon.
"The public are urged to contact police if they sight Lane, or the vehicle, but should not approach him."
