KEY POINTS:
Police have launched a homicide inquiry after the death of a man who was assaulted at an Auckland bus stop over the weekend.
Graham Wallace Arcus of Onehunga was attacked about 9.20pm on Saturday at the Watchman's Lane bus stop on Manukau Rd, Royal Oak.
Police said the 61-year-old died in Auckland Hospital at 6.45am today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cramer of Glen Innes CIB said it appeared Mr Arcus had been attacked by a man as he walked past a group of young men at the bus stop.
"Police and ambulance services were called and Mr Arcus was taken to hospital for observation and as a precautionary measure," Mr Cramer said.
"Sadly - for everyone involved - he died this morning and what was a serious assault investigation has become a homicide investigation," he said.
"We'd very much like to hear from anyone who thinks they might have some information for us about Mr Arcus' movements before he was punched to the ground and events subsequent to that."
Information can be called into Auckland Central Police Station - ph 09 302 6400.
