A burst pipe last night left almost a thousand people without water in the Acacia Bay area of Taupo.
Taupo District Council spokeswoman Dee Wilson said water from the pipe then undermined an area of Wakeman Road.
She says homes in the immediate vicinity had to be cleared.
Due to difficulty determining the extent of the damage in darkness and the possibility other homes may have been undermined, three more were evacuated as a precaution.
Power was also cut to the area for a time while a temporary water supply was put in place.
Residents are advised there could be further disruption to water and power supply throughout the day as efforts continue to get the service fully functional.
