KEY POINTS:
Several rural homes have been evacuated after a fire broke out at the Milton Water Treatment Plant, south of Dunedin.
The blaze started at a chemical storage area of the plant about 3.30am. Fire crews from Milton and Dunedin are at the scene.
A number of farm houses within 500 metres of the blaze have been evacuated and police have set up a cordon.
Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said a chlorine tank was causing concern.
