Two people have appeared in court after police discovered a homemade explosive device during a raid on a Northland methamphetamine lab.
Police made the discovery yesterday after executing a search warrant at a rural property in Tangiteroria, about 31km west of Whangarei.
They also found a firearm, dangerous chemicals and equipment used for the manufacture of methamphetamine.
A 38-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman appeared in Whangarei District Court today jointly charged with manufacturing methamphetamine.
The man was also charged with possession of a precursor substance, unlawful possession of a pistol and unlawful possession of explosives, while the woman was charged with permitting premises to be used for drug offences.
Detective Sergeant Mike Blowers of the Northland organised crime unit said it was concerning that four children under the age of 14 living at the address had been "exposed to the dangerous substances".
Early indications were that the lab was of significant size and had been operating for a number of weeks, he said.
Locating the lab and arresting the offenders should send a message that police will target those who continue to manufacture and supply illicit drugs, Mr Blowers said.
Members of the public should report suspicious activity to police, especially if they noticed strong chemical smells around a property, large stockpiles of empty containers and unusual late night activity.
