A woman who suffered serious fractures and cuts to her face in a home invasion on Auckland's North Shore early today was not the victim of a random attack, police say.
The assault happened in Glenfield about 2am when at least three offenders entered the house and assaulted the 45-year-old woman with a blunt object.
While the offenders were in the house they asked for someone who lived there by a nickname, Detective Sergeant Kim Libby said.
Police got the information about the nickname from three people, believed to be friends of the family, who were sleeping in the house at the time.
Police said because of the extent of the woman's injuries " we don't think we'll get to speak to her until tomorrow".
The woman has a broken jaw, broken shoulder and missing teeth. Police are still trying to find her next of kin, including her children.
She was taken to Auckland Hospital and was later transferred to Middlemore Hospital, where she is receiving treatment.
Police remain at the scene and are conducting a forensic examination, which is expected to take the rest of the day.
Neighbours living in the immediate area will also be interviewed today.
