Home detention for text driver

A 21-year-old Hawkes Bay driver who struck and killed 93-year-old Phyllis Penman on a pedestrian crossing when distracted by an incoming text message has been sentenced to nine months' home detention and disqualified for three years.

Curtis Lawson had sent two texts moments before the collision and had got a reply to one.
