Hawke's Bay have the upper hand, but only just, on the first day of their Hawke Cup qualifying round cricket fixture with Wairarapa at Queen Elizabeth Park oval, Masterton, on Saturday.

The visitors, who started hot favourites after thumping Wairarapa by nine wickets at the recent Chapple Cup one-day tournament, were rocked when a mixture of persistent Wairarapa bowling and some excellent work in the field combined to have them three down before they reached the 100 mark. But the visitors recovered well, declaring their first innings closed at a healthy 316-5.

Of the plethora of medium pacers in the Wairarapa attack it was Seth Rance and Calvin Ball who made the biggest impression, while spinner Jamie Holmes showed good control of flight and length.

It was Holmes who also took the eye when Wairarapa batted and got through to 52 for the loss of just one wicket. His 37 came off 61 balls and included five fours.

On the club front, the latest matches in The Rock Twenty20 senior men's competition saw Greytown, Lansdowne and Red Star register wins.

An excellent all-round performance by Steve Coleman was the highlight of Greytown's victory over Kuranui Old Boys. Coleman took 3 for 7 from his four overs as Old Boys mustered a total of 110 - 28 of which came from extras, including 15 wides He then led the way with the bat and was unbeaten on 48 when the target was reached with five wickets to spare. He faced 49 balls and struck just two fours. The pick of the Old Boys bowlers was Sanjay Patel who took 4-8 from his four overs.

A strong opening partnership between Richard French (51) and Chris Wenden (24) gave Red Star a flying start against Rathkeale College as they posted 130 for 5. French hit six fours and one six. Rathkeale College reached 107-5 at the end of their 20 overs, thanks in the main to Thor Crombie whose 57 included seven fours and came from 58 balls.

In-form opener Justin Herbert provided the bulk of the runs when Lansdowne reached a healthy 145-6 against Wairarapa College. His 76 came from just 49 balls and included 11 fours and two sixes.

Aaron Bidlake was best of the rest with 28 from 23 balls. Wairarapa College couldn't match that effort, scoring 96 for 8 with tailender Hamish Woolgar striking four fours in his unbeaten 21.
