KEY POINTS:
What treasures lurk behind the walls of New Zealand homes?
Strands of Marilyn Monroe's hair? Original promotional posters of Buffalo Bill's Wild West touring show? escapologist Harry Houdini's keys?
Yes, yes, and yes, if you are in rural Mangawhai, north of Auckland.
In Carl and Vanessa Janson's ordinary home, Mr Janson's extraordinary collection of Hollywood memorabilia is so big he has had to buy two storage sheds to house it.
Around 60,000 items, including about 10,000 celebrity signatures, have been amassed by the digital film restorer.
But enough is enough, he told the Weekend Herald this week.
"I'm selling them off now. I always had it in the back of my mind that I'd open up a cinema-type museum. But it's just got too big. Life's got too busy. And there's just not enough room.
"I don't smoke, but this is my bad habit - I collect things. I guess that, like a smoker, I need to kick it now. But it's going to be hard."
His collection started in Hamilton when, about 20 years ago, he saw an original poster from the 1976 movie Midway - the first movie he ever saw.
His collection grew steadily, but really ballooned late last year when he spent about $80,000 on a friend's collection of 25,000 items.
"For insurance purposes, you're looking at easily one million dollars," Mr Janson said of his hoard.
He plans to sell the collection through online auctions and auction houses in New Zealand's major cities.
