The holiday weekend road toll remained at three last night, as people returned home.
Police said traffic was flowing fairly well around the country with few major incidents.
The weekend's first fatality was on Saturday night when a 40-year-old was killed while walking in the Tapuae Valley, 2km north of Oakura, Taranaki.
The next day an elderly man died in a crash on the outskirts of Christchurch.
Also on Sunday, a crash at a roadworks site on State Highway 57 just north of Levin claimed the life of a woman.
A 42-year-old man with her was flown to Palmerston North Hospital with suspected head injuries.
