The holiday season road toll rose to six overnight with the death of a woman who fell out of a car in Auckland on Christmas Day.
The 37-year-old woman suffered severe head injuries after falling out of the front passenger door of the moving vehicle in Mt Albert Rd about 8.55pm.
Police would interview her husband, who was driving, about the incident early next week, Sergeant Scott Leonard told NZPA today.
There did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, Mr Leonard said.
But officers would ask the husband what had happened before and during the drive.
Police have yet to release the woman's name.
Investigators would begin an inspection of the vehicle today to determine whether the passenger door was open before the incident, and whether the woman was wearing a seatbelt.
Yesterday, two men were killed in a crash south of Paraparaumu about 3.40am and a female motorcyclist died in a collision with a truck at Otira near Arthur's Pass just before 10am.
Vailepa Misa, 30, of Levin, and Utulei Tolai, 19, died when their car left the road on the corner of State Highway 1 and Poplar Ave, south of Paraparaumu.
The car crashed into a tree and burst into flames, killing the pair instantly.
There was nothing to indicate whether alcohol or speed was a factor, police said.
An autopsy was due to be carried out today and a funeral service was planned for Monday.
The name of the woman killed in the West Coast motorcycle crash has not been released, police said today. Officers were having trouble tracking down family members over the holiday period.
A 44-year-old woman passenger was killed on Christmas Day and three other occupants injured when a vehicle went through a barrier and plunged down a 70m bank near Omaha, 16km northeast of Warkworth, shortly before 5pm.
On Christmas Eve, a 27-year-old woman pedestrian was killed when hit by a car in Auckland's Blockhouse Bay shortly before 7pm.
The names of both women had yet to be released.
Over the Christmas-New Year holiday period last year there were 21 deaths and 72 serious injuries on the roads.
The period started at 4pm on Tuesday and runs to 6am on January 3.
