The road toll has risen to 17 for the Christmas-New Year period.
Last night a person died in a crash on State Highway 2 at Whakamarama, near Tauranga. Earlier in the evening a driver was killed when his truck and trailer unit rolled into a ditch at Reporoa, near Rotorua.
Eighteen people died in crashes in the previous Christmas to New Year period. The official holiday road toll period ends at 6am on Monday.
