Parking meters in central Auckland should be working correctly on the statutory holidays during the Christmas and new year period after 180 machines were programmed to charge the weekday rate on Labour Day.
A council spokesman said human error led to people paying $4 an hour on Labour Day instead of $2, and $2 the next day, October 25, instead of the weekday rate of $4.
The council would reimburse anyone who paid the $4 hourly rate if they came forward with a parking receipt but would not be chasing people who got the cheaper rate on October 25.
The spokesman said the Labour weekend mix-up was the first time the particular machines had been incorrectly programmed: "I would expect our blemish-free record will continue but human error can't be discounted."
