KEY POINTS:
Those heading off on holiday over the Christmas break are being urged to plan for the unexpected. Recent disasters world wide have prompted Civil Defence Minister Rick Barker to put out some reminders for the break.
Mr Barker says unlike people, disasters do not go on holiday. He says if you are going camping for example, make sure you have enough food and warm clothing, take a map, and set up in a hazard free zone. Mr Barker says it is not just about being prepared at home, but also about having a plan and keeping your family safe when you are away.
Mr Barker says if you are staying at home, make sure your civil defence kit is stocked up.
