Prolific scoring forward Rowan Yeo provided the highlight for a Wairarapa team which finished a creditable 11th at the national under-18 boys hockey tournament in Wellington last week .
With 13 goals Yeo was the second highest scorer at the tourney with his most memorable effort coming in Wairarapa's final game, the playoff for 11 th and 12 th with Taranaki, where he scored all of their goals in their 6-2 success.
Wairarapa were left playing off for between ninth and 16 th after they lost to Otago 3-7 in the last of their pool matches.
The first of their cross-over games saw them dominate possession in beating Wanganui 3-1 and then came a loss to Tauranga by the same scoreline.
That meant Taranaki was their last opponent and with Yeo firing on all cylinders they won a game which was more evenly contested than the scoreline would suggest. Co-coach Michelle Hodgkiss was full of praise for Wairarapa's overall performance, saying they had played to their potential in most games.
Yeo was obviously the standout on attack and Orin Lockyer, Dane Lett, Isaac berry and Hamish Linton were a formidable defensive unit.
Meanwhile the Wairarapa under-15 boys hockey team is on target to reach the quarter-finals of their national tournament in Auckland.
They won their opening pool game against Thames Valley 5-0 before losing to the powerful Auckland side 0-8. And on Tuesday they edged out Manawatu 2-1 to leave them needing a win over Taranaki yesterday to qualify second in their pool and into the top eight.
