The Wairarapa Rawleigh Girls U13 Hockey Team have swapped usual fundraising ideas with one that aims to empower young Wairarapa women.

The Rawleigh Girls' event Inspiring Women will showcase several women's' experiences as various career professionals to inspire Wairarapa Women in their own careers.

It will be held at the Carterton Events Centre at 6.30pm on Wednesday, September 23.

Organiser of the event Lisa Donaldson said the funds raised will help the Rawleigh girls compete in their October hockey tournament in Gisborne.

"We wanted to do a fundraiser that wasn't just a fundraiser, but was an opportunity for young women and their parents to come along and hear really interesting women speak," she said.

"They'll be talking about their careers, from biomedical research to graphic design, and from international business to international journalism.

"So it's something different that's putting some good role models out there for our young women in Wairarapa.

"And it's all been met really positively."

She said all members of the community were welcome and tickets were available on Event Finda.

"It's not just for parents with daughters, boys are welcome too, and anyone who wants to come to listen to these inspiring women talk.

"There's a lot of fascinating women out there, under the radar, doing really interesting work that you might not know about. And I'm hoping that this might spark an idea within someone about something they may never thought about doing before."

Confirmed guest speaker Sally Round, a Radio NZ journalist, said her main message on the night would be "to aim high and go for it".

"But you need to make it happen. Don't sit back," she said.
