An HIV-positive former male prostitute, Christopher Truscott, absconded from court-ordered care in Christchurch and was found by police several hours later.
Truscott, aged 32, walked away from a residence where he was being held under court order.
It was the fourth time he had absconded since being detained in isolation under section 79 of the Health Act.
Truscott, who is intellectually impaired, has boasted to police that he has had sex with thousands of men.
H admitted in the Christchurch District Court last year that he had had unprotected sex with four men without disclosing he was HIV-positive.
Truscott was sentenced to nine months in jail, suspended for two years, and ordered to undertake two years' supervision, provided he remained at the Christchurch house where he was being isolated under the act.
Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Mel Brieseman said security at the house had been upgraded several times and would be reviewed again.
He said authorities were still looking at a suggestion after one of Truscott's previous escapes that his sexual desires be accommodated in some form.
