A woman hitch-hiker got more than she bargained for after the car she was in led police on a chase through western Bay of Plenty yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Anna Jackson, of Rotorua police, said the woman was "shaken but relieved" when she finally got out of the vehicle.
The drama began at 2.15pm after police received a call about a stolen Subaru four wheel drive that was dangerously overtaking vehicles and speeding along State Highway 5.
A highway patrol unit spotted the car which overtook a long line of traffic on no passing lines despite being followed by police.
The car was eventually stopped and two boys in it ran off.
Several police cordons were put in place and two 16-year boys were arrested 10 minutes later at a house.
The car had been stolen from Auckland.
The boys will be referred to police youth aid.
