The aunt of a young hit-and-run victim believes police are closing in on the driver who sped away from an accident, leaving her nephew lying injured in the road.
Three-year-old Joseph Tu'inukuafe is in a stable condition at Auckland Hospital after being struck by a car in Mount Eden last evening. He is likely to undergo surgery today.
His aunt Annie Takie says when she left the hospital early this morning, he was doing OK. She says the driver is the only one who knows what actually happened, and hopes the person will give themselves up to police.
She believes the police have a couple of suspects.
Annie Takie says it is hard for the family to understand what happened, since the driver just took off.
The car is described as a silver four-door 1980s Honda.
It is likely one of the front headlights has been damaged and witnesses say the driver's rear side light was not working.
