KEY POINTS:
A 41-year-old woman is seriously ill in Auckland Hospital after a hit and run in Matakana, north of Auckland, on Wednesday night.
The woman was hit about midnight as she walked in Govan Wilson Road, at Matakana.
The vehicle did not stop and the woman was found seven hours later in a ditch beside the road by a local resident walking a dog.
"The victim has serious head and body injuries and surgery has been necessary. This was carried out at Auckland Hospital yesterday," said Detective Kevin Blackman from the Warkworth police.
"Whoever was responsible for this incident has known that they have hit something. There is a high possibility that the vehicle involved is damaged.
"I urge the person responsible to come forward so that police can determine the full facts on what has happened," he said.
He said anyone who knew the driver or details of the incident could call him at Warkworth CIB (09 425 0836).
