KEY POINTS:
The driver of a car that hit a Christchurch party-goer and dragged him for 25 metres turned himself in to police today.
Around midnight on Saturday there was a fight between two groups who had been at a party on Stevens Street in the suburb of Phillipstown.
Shortly after a 29-year-old man was hit by a car on nearby Wilsons Road and was dragged along before the car drove off.
The man was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries including suspected broken legs, a broken pelvis, punctured lung, broken ribs and a damaged liver. He was placed in an induced coma.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey said the man's condition had improved but he remained in the intensive care unit.
Around midday today the car's driver appeared at Christchurch police station.
Mr Harvey said police had spoken with him but it was too early to say what charges the man might face.
