Firefighters have contained a big scrub fire in the Mackenzie Basin, South Canterbury, but feared rising winds would let it get away again overnight.
The blaze in the Ruataniwha Conservation Park bordering lakes Ohau and Pukaki started about 8.30am yesterday near the highway and had burned through about 55ha of grassland and scrub by late afternoon.
