Some 2500 Wellington homes were left without electricity early this morning after high winds damaged power lines.
The outage occurred at 12.15am and largely affected the Karori and Makara suburbs, Wellington Electricity spokesman Damien Batey told NZPA.
About 2500 properties initially lost power, but were mostly back on line within a couple of hours, Mr Batey said.
About 250 houses remained without power until about 8.30am when the lines were repaired, and a further 10 houses in the immediate vicinity of the lines were still without power.
Mr Batey said the almost all the properties affected were residential.
Meanwhile, continuing bad weather in the Wellington region has prompted police to issue a warning for drivers to show extra caution.
There has been flooding in parts of the city centre this morning.
Police said they had received reports of high winds between Eketahuna and Masterton on State Highway 2, as well as on Rimutaka Hill Road.
Further south, the winter weather was causing some concern, with the MetService issuing a severe weather warning for heavy rain in Fiordland and Westland over the weekend.
MetService said there would be significant spillover for the headwaters of the Canterbury and Otago rivers.
Environment Otago and Environment Southland said the weather was being watched carefully, but at this stage they expected the storm's effects to be manageable.
