KEY POINTS:
High winds have wreaked havoc across south-eastern parts of Auckland.
Northern Fire Communications said winds gusting 110km/h had brought down trees and powerlines on roads.
The winds had also ripped roofing iron off buildings in Pakuranga and Mt Wellington.
There have been no reports of flooding.
MetService Weather Ambassador Bob McDavitt said the front had moved half way across the North Island and currently sat over the Bay of Islands.
He said more strong westerlies would arrive tonight and people could expect squally westerly showers over the weekend.
Thunder strikes were expected to die away, he said.
