Marlborough and Wellington are set to be lashed by gale force winds.
MetService forecaster Heath Gullery is warning of a cold front moving up the South Island, and hitting the North Island tonight.
"Winds could reach severe gale force for a time this morning and early afternoon in exposed parts of Marlborough, and this morning and afternoon for exposed parts of Wellington," Mr Gullery said.
He said the winds have the potential to damage trees and bring down powerlines.
Police are also advising motorists to drive with caution, especially in the Wairarapa area and on the Rimutaka Hill, north of Wellington.
