A 23-year-old man who allegedly led police on a high-speed pursuit, reaching speeds of up to 180km/h in a temporary 30km/h posted area and through a residential area has been remanded in custody.
Hayden Pool appeared before Judge Barbara Morris in Masterton District Court on Monday facing charges of stealing a Subaru car, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, drink driving and burglary.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Garry Wilson said Pool had burgled a Napier home on August 30 and on a later date when police saw him driving at speed, he took off from them leading the officers on a high speed chase reaching speeds of between 160km/h and 170km/h in a 50km/h zone and 180km/h through a road works zone with a temporary speed of 30km/h.
It is alleged when the car stopped Pool took off and was caught by a police dog which bit him.
Defence lawyer Frank Minehan made an application for bail, which Judge Morris refused.
