KEY POINTS:
A new senior high school in Flat Bush is to open in 2011.
City planners have been working towards creating Flat Bush as one of New Zealand's newly created towns.
It is expected to be home to around 40,000 people - 8500 of them being school-aged children.
The new high school - now Ormiston Road Senior High School - is expected to have a school roll of 1000 students at its initial opening, with enrolments for year 11 students beginning from term one.
Around 1600 students are expected to be enrolled by 2020.
The school is one of four planned in the area, including a primary and a junior high school, expected to open around 2013.
Yesterday, Education Minister Chris Carter announced the opening of the new high school.
"This is an exciting time for Manukau City," he said.
The new Flat Bush town will be built on 1700ha of undeveloped land.
