A survey shows people on higher incomes are more likely to support the Super City concept than those at the lower end of the scale.
Research New Zealand has found 41 per cent of people living in Auckland support the Super City idea and 45 per cent do not.
Director Emanuel Kalafatelis says only one per cent of Auckland respondents did not have an opinion on the issue, which is an insignificant percentage and shows Auckland is divided.
He says unusually, there are no trends in the research around demographics such as age or gender. He says income is proving a point of difference.
"People who were on higher annual income of $70,000 or more per annum, where more likely to support the decision, as opposed to those on lower incomes."
Nationally, 39 per cent of New Zealanders are in favour of the change and 36 per cent oppose it. Fourteen per cent do not have an opinion one way or another.
