Armed offenders squads on both sides of the Southern Alps and three helicopters were used yesterday to end a three-hour pursuit that started with a domestic dispute near Christchurch.
Police said they received a call shortly after midday from a distressed woman who had jumped out of a car after a domestic dispute. Her partner had driven off with their 4-year-old boy in the car toward the West Coast.
Senior Sergeant Stu Munro, of Christchurch, said the car was eventually stopped by spikes at Otira. The boy was safe and had been returned to his mother.
A 23-year-old man will appear in Christchurch District Court today over the incident.
